Traditional Media vs. High Tech - It is Really About Change
It comes as no surprise when you read that advertising revenues are down in traditional media outlets. Newspapers and magazines are crumbling. TV and Radio are stagnant.
Movies and of course the music industry are so beat up that few people even notice when another industry player goes under.
Yes the digital media revolution has brutalized conventional media outlets. But that is not the whole picture. There have always been some smart businesses that work through the changes in the system to do exceptionally well, in spite of economic or technological changes. In fact the smart players do not fight the change - they embrace it or even lead the change.
Disney has for many years been pushing the boundary of what works in the movie business. They invested heavily in the technology end of the movie business early on with computer generated imagery (CGI). In 2010 Disney had 2 movies that both did over a billion dollars in the same year. Both depended almost entirely on CGI.
Embracing change and using technology to do it seem to be an obvious choice in the movie business especially for huge companies.
The real secret is that it is also the way for small businesses and in every industry. But it is not just about the technology it is about having the willingness to use anything that can give you the advantage.
